Nirmala Rajesh - Carnatic Music teacher

Mrs. Nirmala Ramamoorthy was initiated into formal Carnatic vocal training at a very young age. Her many years of instruction led her to the pursuit of a formal education in Music, notably a B.A. degree from Queen Mary’s Arts College in Chennai. During her academic tenure, she came under the tutelage of the late Sri. Kedarnathan (disciple of the late legend, Sri. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer) and wife, Mrs. Meera Kedarnathan. Nirmala also had intense vocal training from musicians such as Sri. Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Sri. Vittal Ramaurthy as well as Sri. Koundinyan Srikanth and Sri. Muthukrishnan Ramamurthi (two long-time disciples of Neyveli Sir). Since arriving in the U.S. 7 years ago, Nirmala has continued learning vocal music from a few different teachers and has also taken up instruction in Carnatic violin. She is currently learning violin from T.Hemamalini a senior disciple of Violin legend Smt. Kanyakumari. She has participated in many music competitions, was featured in Sun TV’s “Sapta Swarangal” program and was even named once as “Best Teenage Artist”.

Aside from being a student and performer, Nirmala has also been a teacher of Carnatic music to students both in-person and online over the past 10 years. Nirmala along with her husband Rajesh Swaminathan (a vocalist and performer of carnatic music for many years) have given joint performances at functions held by various local organizations and temples over the last 5 years and gave their debut duet concert at Asthiga Samajam in Thiruvanmiyur during the 2012 December Chennai music festival.

Nirmala also provides continued support and assistance to her husband Rajesh who is currently serving CMANA (Carnatic Music association of North America) as Secretary on its Board of Trustees.

Professionally, Nirmala holds two (2) Master’s degrees in Banking and Financial Services Management and has worked in the banking and investment sector for the past 10 years.
